What do you do when you love riding a bike and you have a stroke?

This happened to Andre Hamel. “For the first two weeks after my stroke, I was only concerned if I would live. Then I began asking my therapists if I would walk again, but their answer was that they did not have a crystal ball. It was only after I began to go to the gym that I thought maybe I would one day be able to ride again.”

“One of the best moments after my stroke was when the therapist put me on a trike in their gym. I could feel the air against my face as I pedaled, and that really lifted my spirits.”
Andre just became a US permanent resident and is fortunate to live where cycling is feasible all year round. In addition, there is an abundance of bike lanes and bike paths in Davis.
Andre’s solution was to sell his road bikes and his city bike and replace them with an electric recumbent tricycle.
“I love this trike more than all my road bikes of the past,” said Andre. “With this trike I can explore the entire city of Davis and do errands like grocery shopping. After a year stuck in my house and on the couch, my trike gives me back my freedom.”
